Staff expecting pay rises in GFC

PAY RISEMost workers expect a pay rise this year and 41% will look for another job if they don’t get one, a CareerOne.com survey has found.

Two thirds of the 850 respondents said they needed a pay increase of 5% or more to keep pace with their expenses. Training and development (31%) and flexible working hours (25%) were the most popular non-financial rewards they wanted in lieu of a pay rise.

Twenty-four per cent were afraid to ask their manager about a pay rise, especially given the economic climate, while 71% said they would work a shorter week to save their job.

CareerOne.com.au editor, Kate Southam said that pay rises were a tightrope for employers and employees this year. Employers needed to find a way to recognise people, “even if it isn’t in cold, hard cash”, she said.
