Thomson Reuters is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Simon Rice OAM as the Section Editor for a brand new Human Rights Section in The Australian Law Journal. As part of a reinvigoration program, a range of new Sections are being commissioned to ensure that subscribers are receiving a wide range of valuable and useful content.

Simon Rice

Simon has worked and researched extensively in anti-discrimination, human rights and access to justice issues. He is currently Professor of Law and Director of Law Reform and Social Justice at the ANU College of Law, and Chair of the Australian Capital Territory Law Reform Advisory Council.

After a period in private commercial practice Simon worked extensively in community legal centres in NSW, where he practised extensively in poverty law, particularly anti-discrimination law. He has been Director of the NSW Law and Justice Foundation, President of Australian Lawyers for Human Rights, a Board member of the NSW Legal Aid Commission, a consultant to the NSW Law Reform Commission, and a judicial member of the NSW Administrative Decisions Tribunal. He has trained and advised on human rights to a wide range of businesses, agencies and NGOs.

Simon was a lecturer in the UNSW Law Faculty 1989-1995 where he was director of clinical programs, and taught at Sydney University Law Faculty in 2000 and 2001. He was a senior lecturer in the Division of Law at Macquarie University from 2005-2007, and has been at the ANU College of Law since 2008, where he was appointed to a chair in 2013.

Simon has researched and written extensively on human rights law;  he a co-author, with Adam McBeth and Justine Nolan, of International Law of Human Rights, Oxford, 2012, with Nick O’Neill and Roger Douglas of Retreat from Injustice, Human Rights Law in Australia, Federation Press, 2004, and with Neil Rees and Dominique Allen of Australian Anti-Discrimination Law, Federation Press, 2013. He is a member of the Australian Human Rights Teachers Network and teaches ‘Human Rights Law in Australia’ at the ANU.

In 2002 Simon was awarded a Medal in the Order of Australia for legal services to the economically and socially disadvantaged, and has received a UNSW Alumni Award.  In 2008 Simon was an invitee to the Australian Government’s 2020 Summit.

Professor Rice’s expertise on Human Rights will be of great benefit to readers of The Australian Law Journal and we take great pleasure in welcoming him to the team.
