The 2015 McCallum Medal Competition, named in honour of industrial relations expert and former Dean of University of Sydney, Faculty of Law, Professor Ron McCallum AO, was held  on Thursday 12th November at the Seyfarth Shaw offices in Chifley Towers, Sydney.

Claire Limbach won first prize on the night, discussing in favour of amending the Fair Work Act to remove the emphasis on reinstatement as the primary remedy in unfair dismissal proceedings.

The McCallum Medal Competition is an annual public speaking competition open to young lawyers and students interested in employment law and industrial relations.The five finalist presented their topics on the night to a panel of judges including Professor McCallum, consultant at HWL Ebsworth Lawyers and Ambassador for Light for the World, Senior Deputy President Lee Drake and Vice President Joe Catanzariti of the Fair Work Commission as well as an audience of lawyers, judges, academics and family.

Thomson Reuters has been a long standing supporter of the event, providing a $500 book voucher as part of the first prize. Runner up Nandan Subramaniam received a prize of $300 book voucher and Angus Abadee won the lucky door prize of the latest Fair Work Legislation 2015 book . The winner’s entry will be published in a forthcoming issue of TR’s industrial relations journal Workplace Review.
