It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the first such conference since 1977.<\/p>\n<p>An impressive lineup of more than 50 high profile speakers provided informative and challenging presentations on major themes, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What every lawyer should know<\/li>\n<li>Digital technology and its impact on teaching, learning and legal practice<\/li>\n<li>New skills and essential knowledge for lawyers<\/li>\n<li>Making connections: law interacting across disciplines and international borders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Professor Martha C. Nussbaum, the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago Law School, delivered the keynote presentation on\u00c2\u00a0<em>\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcWhy Lawyers Need a Broader Education\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/em>, which outlined the value of critical and socially aware lawyers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The conference included a welcome reception at Allens opened by the Hon Justice Fran\u00c3\u00a7ois Kunc (<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.thomsonreuters.com.au\/journals\/category\/the-australian-law-journal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General Editor, ALJ<\/a>) and the Hon Kevin Lindgren AM QC (President of AAL). A Gala Dinner was hosted at NSW Parliament House where guest speaker the Hon Justice Virginia Bell AC of the High Court Australia presented an uplifting and entertaining speech on her experience as a young lawyer studying in Queensland.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG chaired the final plenary session. Some highlights of his session were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A plea from the President of the Australian Law Students\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Association, Dan Trevanion, that stakeholders ask students what they expect from their legal education; and<\/li>\n<li>The Chairman of the Council of Australian Law Deans, Professor William MacNeil, leading the entire audience in an uplifting group chant of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153<em>I-love-the-law\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The conference\u00c2\u00a0was well received by more than 160 delegates including our leading authors, customers and stakeholders with positive discussion and rigorous debate during the sessions.
