It has been said that the expression \u00e2\u20ac\u0153beyond reasonable doubt\u00e2\u20ac\u009d is an expression \u00e2\u20ac\u0153used by ordinary people and is well understood by the average [person] in the community\u00e2\u20ac\u009d. What does beyond reasonable doubt mean? Since the 1971 decision of the High Court in <em>Green<\/em>, differences of opinions have emerged at intermediate appellate court level. Why is it that judges believe it is an expression used and well understood by \u00e2\u20ac\u0153ordinary people\u00e2\u20ac\u009d? The experience of trial judges and research suggests otherwise.
