These consumers apply for a loan because they have little, if any, savings and are typically on very low incomes. Schedules 3 and 4 of the <i>Consumer Credit Legislation Amendment (Enhancements) Act 2012 <\/i>(Cth) amends the <i>National Consumer Credit Protection Act 2009 <\/i>(Cth) to bolster consumer protection in this area by banning \u00e2\u20ac\u0153short-term credit contracts\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, providing for stricter regulation of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153small amount credit contracts\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, and introducing nationwide caps on the maximum amount which credit providers are permitted to charge consumers. This debate has lost the momentum it had at the end of the last century, arguably because of the introduction of taxpayer-funded safety net schemes. However, the misdeeds of company controllers have not decreased, and both liquidators and victims are disillusioned with the relative lack of action from the regulator, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).
