Thomson Reuters would like to congratulate Joanna Vincent, the 2013 winner of the annual McCallum Medal presentation competition. This year’s prize was held on Wednesday 6th November at the Fair Work Commission in Sydney, and once again showcased the outstanding talent of students and recent graduates passionate about workplace relations.

Joanna took home a $500 book voucher from Thomson Reuters and $500 cash from The College of Law. Her presentation “Filling the Regulatory Gap”, relating to the new Workplace Bullying laws, was insightful and clear.
This year’s runner-up was Tom Kavanagh, who spoke on “Social Media: Recruitment and Dismissal”. Tom won a $300 book voucher from Thomson Reuters and $200 cash from The College of Law.
Joanna and Tom will both be published in a forthcoming part of Thomson Reuters’ Workplace Review.
This year five finalists were selected to present their topic of choice to the panel of three judges: Professor Ron McCallum AO himself, along with Senior Deputy President Lea Drake and Vice President Joe Catanzariti of the Fair Work Commission. All finalists demonstrated an impressive knowledge of their chosen subjects, both in their presentations, and during subsequent questioning by the judges.
Renee Kasbarian (also a finalist in the 2012 competition), Alexia Bull, and Kirstie Underwood, the remaining three finalists, also made strong presentations on the new Workplace Bullying Laws, the question of whether litigants before the FWC should be represented, and a case study on the impact of retrospective legislation in Goudappel v ADCO Constructions Pty Ltd.
